“Traditions and culture has a way of stealing a person’s common sense. Most especially, this Yulin Festival Dog Meat Eating case. How stupid can society get?” Goes the rant of a friend of mine or that what she was trying to get across. The point is that, I, too, tend to agree with her rant. It was kind of disturbing that people slaughter thousands of innocent dogs for the sake of the festival and what’s even more disturbing are the people who are too pessimistic about putting an end to this barbaric activity. I was compelled to ask why couldn’t we put an end to this activity. Well, in order to get the answer, I decided to debate on the idea and got few answers.
- The Lack of Knowledge
One particular statement that caught me off guard was “If you’d stop eating cow meat, then we’ll stop eating dog meat.” Seriously? First of all, a DOG or a CAT is a DOMESTICATED ANIMAL, not an AGRICULTURAL animal, so the analogy and comparison are plain dumb. Cows, chicken, ducks, pigs and other cultured animals are NOT DOMESTICATED animals, not unless, you chose to domesticate them. See? The lack of knowledge makes one person dull and dumb at the same time.
Traditions, as what my friend said, has the ability to rob us out of our common sense and logic. Yes, traditions have their merit, but to brutally execute some poor and innocent animal for the sake of luck and good health is illogical. You can always have luck if you work hard and smart. You can always have good health when you learn how to take good care of your body and your surroundings. Nevertheless, the subject of tradition is still a taboo subject.
- We are outnumbered
Our numbers active on the petition are totally outnumbered and most especially, we are talking about going against a barbaric tradition that has been “valued” by the citizens of Yulin. China doesn’t even have animal protection laws. Imagine, the challenge, but nevertheless 2M Chinese citizens decided to stand up and go against the tide for our helpless friends.
I, personally, know that this is going to be a long fight, but I want to #STOPYULINFESTIVAL forever. Our domesticated animals don’t deserve to be treated this way. I will use this little voice to put an end to a barbaric tradition or any sorts. Humans were created to take care of those who are below them, not abuse them. By gathering the voice of many, who knows, we can put an end to any dog meat-eating festival.
